Back From Autism One 2015

Terra is at home from Autism One 2015 and getting back into Mia’s schedule.  She met a great group of people there with what looks like great products.  Check them out by clicking on the links provided in some of the conference pics. Autism One 2015 was helpful and invigorated her to the point of exhaustion which is why I am writing this post instead of her.  No worries, she pre-approves or approves everything before publication.

There is a lot of information to sort through.  What she and Craig thinks will help Mia?  What won’t?  It will take a month or so.  Then there is carrying out the plan and finding ways to pay for implementing the plan.

In the meantime, look at what her garden sprouted.  They built it off the ground because who knows what's been put down into the soil?

Autism 2014 Two Happy Smiths

Two happy Smiths - Salon Night winners at Autism One. Jessica Smith & Terra Smith
In 2014, I went with Jessica Adkins-Smith.  Autism One 2013 made such an impression, I had to share the experience.  It was so cool to experience this with another mom.

It felt just like coming home, so many faces I had met from the year before.  And there were people who I had talked to online that I finally got to meet.

Jessica and I won tickets from a photo contest of our kids to attend Salon night.  We got pampered for free.  We normally don't take time to do those things for ourselves.

Autism One - 2013

Me and Jenny McCarthy
May 2013 was my first trip to the Autism One Conference in Chicago.  It was also my very first time ever in a taxi. As I walked from that taxi into the hotel, I had no clue how life changing that conference would be for my family.

I am very thankful to those who helped me get there especially my husband, Craig, who did a great job in keeping everything consistent and taking care of Mia.  The conference inspired and empowered me, so many testimonies, so many other parents like me and Craig, so many kids like Mia.

The information I got could have been overwhelming.  I had learned that simple steps worked best for Mia.  For example, one five to ten minute conversation with a biomedical doctor ended up curing one of Mia's recurring problems.  Of all the ointments, tests, and medicines, the answer was so simple and the condition very preventable.

And... I must confess.  Hearing Jenny McCarthy speak and advocate for autistic kids was both powerful and cool.

This year’s Autism One Conference is May 20-24.  I look forward to the experience.

Managing Mia’s Health

Small important pieces of her care can easily fall between the cracks.  Along with faith, it takes a system.  Here are three approaches I use that help me stay organized and keeps communications clear and concise.
  1. A four-wheeled kitchen cart  - This cart was more like a portable kitchen island with a stainless steel top, cabinet on the bottom, and we installed shelves on top.  There we kept medication, an old school paper calendar. We made notes about appointment and observations on the calendar.
  2. Yearly Medical Summary – All Mia’s data needs to be in one place.  We request medical records for all her doctors and specialist each year.  About 15,000 pages have been digitized.
  3. Pictures for appointments – A picture adds to the dialogue with the physicians about allergies and reactions. Pictures help me remember important details as well.
